Cable glands are elements used to secure cables and electrical wires in places where they are led out of devices, machines, distribution boxes, casings, etc.

Their main function is to protect the wires from mechanical damage, for example, by friction against the sharp edges of the hole through which they are led. Cable glands also provide additional sealing, protecting cables from moisture and dust. In the case of some models of glands, they can also provide protection against cable pullout.

How do cable glands work? Basically, they consist of several parts: a body (often threaded, for mounting in the appropriate hole), a gasket (usually made of elastic material, which adapts to the diameter of the cable) and a nut, which tightens the gasket onto the cable.

In practice, to install a gland, it must first be screwed into the place where the cable will be led out (for example, into a hole in a distribution box), then lead the cable through it and tighten the nut so that the gasket fits well onto the cable. As a result, the cable is protected from damage and undesirable external factors, such as moisture or dust, are effectively blocked.
